Books to read aloud

Thank you to those that left me suggestions on my previous post. One sappy love story between Mr. Old Balls and me coming right up. But first, a discussion on good books to read aloud to children.

We started reading beginner chapter books with Simon right before Kindergarten. Some books have been awful (case in point: Captain Underpants, you are dead to me.) While others (The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane) have been wonderful books.

The following is a list of books that we personally have read. I'm sure there are some we are forgetting. Simon and I worked on this post all day- thinking of books we have read together. In our house, we have all loved anything by Roald Dahl. We've also enjoyed many "older" books by Judy Blume and Beverely Clearly. The name of the author is in bold. Pick one. Start tonight.

Beginner Chapter books and Series books (With the exception of the entire Captain Underpants series, we've read some of these beginner books)
Amelia Bedelia by Peggy Parish
Captain Underpants by David Pilkey (BLEH. Matt read all of these.)
Hank the Cowdog by John R. Erikson
Junie B. Jones by Barbara Park
Magic Treehouse by Mary Pope Osborne

Judy Blume
Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing
Double Fudge

Lynne Reid Banks
The Indian in the Cupboard
The Return of the Indian
The Secret of the Indian
The Mystery of the Cupboard

Beverley Clearly
Henry Huggins
Henry and Beezus
Henry and the Clubhouse
Henry and Ribsy
The Mouse and the Motorcycle
Runaway Ralph
Ramona Quimby, Age 8
Ramona and Her Father
Ramona the Brave
Beezus And Ramona

Roald Dahl
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator
Danny Champion of the World
Fantastic Mr. Fox
James and The Giant Peach (A favorite.)
Max's Marvoulous Medicine
Matilda (Listened to this on tape.)

Kate DiCamillo (Kate's books are higher level books but they are all so good.)
Because of Winn Dixie
The Magician's Elephant
The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane* (One of my all time favorites. SUCH A WONDERFUL STORY. READ IT. NOW.)
The Tale of Despereaux

Gary Paulson
The Hachet
The River (We didn't finish this. It was a little over his head.)

Other stories that we've read:
Little House on the Praire by Laura Ingalls Wilder (This did not really hold Simon's interest, other than the pig bladder ball.)
Mr. Popper's Penguins by Richard Atwater
Charlotte's Web by E.B White
Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney
Rascal by Sterling North
Harry Potter (or 'ARRY POTTER best said in an English accent)

Books we want to read but haven't yet:
Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls (MY MOST FAVORITE BOOK AS A CHILD EVER.)
The rest of Harry Potter
The Chronicles of Narnia
How to Train Your Dragon Series

4 down. 26 to go.
